火山の麓のフォークロア編集室Jalkaのロゴ
北軽井沢の森に暮らす藤野麻子さんと出会ったのは、2011年あたり。東日本大震災の意見交換（時に激しく熱いものだった。今思えばとても刺激的な出会いだった）を機に、徐々に交流が始まり、当時、麻子さんが夫である由貴男さんとともに切り盛りしていた「本とコーヒー・麦小舎」によく通い、また主催されていたブックイベント「book-nick」にも何度か出店させていただいた。老朽化に伴うメンテナンスが必要になった2018年、麦小舎は閉店。そんななか、麻子さんから届いた一通のメールには、彼女の新たな挑戦と、その象徴となるロゴマークと名刺のデザイン依頼が書かれていた。「Jalka（ヤァルカ）」とは、フィンランド語で「Foot（足）」の意。運命的に腰を据えることになった浅間山の麓で、土地の歴史や風物、民俗的な物事を調べるうち、足元に眠る「土地の記憶」の面白さに気づいた麻子さんは、自らの足で歩きながらその痕跡を記録に残すため、編集室を立ち上げる決意を固めた。ロゴマークは、火山活動を続ける浅間山のシルエット。麻子さんの決意と、山麓の地下に今なお蠢く歴史の声が、「ヤァルカ」の文字となって、噴煙のように昇っている。編集室の理念である「足もとをひらく」の文字もドローイング。ロゴマーク、ロゴタイプ、そして理念を、さまざまなフォーマットで組み合わせて使えるようにデザインした。

I met Ayako Fujino for the first time in 2011 whose house is located in KitaKaruizawa. Our story began when we once had heated discussion about Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. Conversations we shared then, I remember, was quite exciting to me. Since then I came to go to “books and coffee, Mugi Kodoneri” where she and her husband were running, and I participated in book events named “book-nick”. In 2018, their shop had closed because of its deterioration. After that, she sent me an email which was the request to design logo and business cards representing her next challenge at the foot of Mt. Asama where she fatefully came to live in. As she had been aroused her interests by the folklore of the area (history, scenery, and folk traditions), she had made up her mind to have an editorial office to so that she may record traces of her explorations. The name she gave to the office is a Finnish word “Jalka” which means “foot” in English. The logo mark I made reflects active Mt. Asama. The word “Jalka” handwritten at the top resembling volcanic smoke which wriggles like her unshaken mind or the voice of history deep beneath the mountain. I also drew the motto “an opened step”. I designed logo, logotype, and the principle in the way that they can be arranged in various formats.
